Sony Introduces Face Recognition Laser Technology in 2019 Handsets

Sony is poised to launch a new laser face recognition technology at the end of 2019. The company asserts that this technology is more efficient and better in supporting the user.


Satoshi Yoshihara, head of Sony's sensors department, said during his remarks last week that the company has new plans to bring a 3D sensor in front and rear cameras for smartphones, a technology many manufacturers are seeking to integrate into future smart phone releases.

He added that the 3D sensor will have many uses in the next smartphones, but Sony aims to support facial recognition by combining this category of sensors for smart phones, where the technology to scan the face accurately by measuring the separation distance Between the sensor and the person when the lasers bounce back.

Sony also confirmed the reliability of this technology in facial recognition with facial scanning support within 5 meters of the sensor, where the mass production of this class of sensors is scheduled to start at the end of 2019.
